Thus HA can be used to maximise the lifespan of oil and gas machinery. An alternative way of preventing wear is by increasing lubricity. Hard Anodising Surface Treatments Ltd can treat aluminium alloys and other base materials to increase lubricity.
In the case of hard anodising, Anolube (PTFE) impregnation works as a kind of semi-permanent lubricant retained in the film. If the base material is not aluminium, an ENP coating containing PTFE has a <0.1 CoF (EN Vs EN) – ask for NiKlad ICE Ultra. The materials used in these machines are also likely to find themselves immersed in high or low pH environments, such as seawater (>7 pH) or near combusting hydrocarbons (low pH).
Hard, chromic, and standard anodising helps protect against both, as does Electroless Nickel Plating.

For corrosion resistance on materials which are not aluminium alloys, high-phosphorous ENP provides excellent protection.

An example of high pH anodising used in this industry is in turbines, which measure the flow of crude oil. The flow of oil rotates the turbines, which have magnets at their outer diameter; the electrical current induced gives information about the flow rate inside the tube.

The pH of crude oil is approximately 10. Such conditions would require the aluminium turbine to be Sulphuric OR Chromic Acid Anodised.
